From the South Limburg hamlet of Thull in Schinnen, this family brewery has always stayed true to its recipe, tradition and core values: timeless and authentic, premium quality and traditional craftsmanship. The fact that this approach is appreciated is reflected in the recognition for Alfa Edel Pils, which was named the Best Pilsner in the World for the second year in a row.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Filtration as an essential part of the brewing process.<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the beer brewing process, filtration plays an essential role. Meens Brewery uses diatomaceous earth in combination with the Celite Standard Supercel filter aid for fast and reliable filtration, removing part of the spent yeast from the beer. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the brewery noticed that the speed of the filtration process was decreasing and the clarity of the pilsner was changing, Profiltra was brought in to investigate whether the cause lay with the diatomaceous earth.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technical Sales Manager Ingmar Schuurman worked closely with Meens Brewery to examine the process and analyse exactly what was happening in the filter chamber. Various measurements were carried out and potential improvements were identified to further optimise the filtration process. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the process, the clarity\/EBC was measured at several points in time and at multiple locations:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>before filtration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>between filtration and PVPP<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>after PVPP<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normally, this EBC measurement is carried out twice: before the filling line and at the end of filtration.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key findings<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analysis revealed several key findings:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Excessive breakthrough through the diatomaceous earth filter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The PVPP filter reduces the EBC value too much.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher dosages affect the permeability of the filter bed; reducing the dosage may improve clarity without affecting the run length.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Irregular clarity measurements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tailored analysis and advice.<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on the analysis and detailed advice, several improvements were implemented in the filter chamber at Meens Brewery. Adjustments to the kieselguhr mixture and dosage, for example, can contribute to an improved filtration process. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, training and support for operators help build knowledge and create a stronger self-learning system within the brewery. Meens now also purchases other products, such as PVPP and HSC. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several recommendations have also been incorporated into protocols, while the brewery continues to work on further process optimisation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Profiltra supports customers with advice, guidance, service and customised solutions for a wide range of industrial applications.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you optimise the filtration process of a pilsner that wins awards worldwide?
