Like other materials, metals have the tendency to expand or contract when temperatures change. In addition, motors, pumps, compressors and other equipment can transfer vibrations to piping systems.
When a metal pipe is connected to a structure or installation, this can lead to stress, deformation or damage to the piping system. In some cases, this may result in leaks.
What does an expansion joint do?
To prevent these types of problems, an expansion joint, also known as an expansion piece, is used. An expansion joint absorbs movements within piping systems caused by temperature effects and mechanical loads.
Depending on the application, expansion joints can, among other things:
- axial movements
- lateral movements
- radial movements
compensate for movements within the piping system.
Metal expansion joints in different designs
Because piping systems come in many different shapes and sizes, Profiltra supplies both standard and custom-made metal expansion joints in a wide range of designs.
The expansion joints are available in:
- round versions
- rectangular versions
and range from a few centimetres to as much as 12 metres in diameter.
In addition to metal expansion joints, Profiltra also supplies rubber expansion joints and fabric expansion joints for a wide range of industrial applications.
Rectangular expansion joints with a single weld seam.
Profiltra’s rectangular metal expansion joints have only one longitudinal weld seam, rather than weld seams in the corners. This construction is unique in the market and contributes to a longer service life of the expansion joint.
How do you select the right expansion joint?
When selecting a suitable expansion joint, several factors must be taken into account, including:
- Diameter, pressure and temperature of the pipes.
- Material of the pipes.
- Movements that may occur.
- Installation length and connections.
- Guides and suspension points.
- Anchors and fixed points.
Based on these and other process data, Profiltra’s specialists determine which expansion joint is most suitable for a specific application.
Applications within industry
Metal expansion joints are used in a wide range of industrial environments, including:
- the (petro)chemical industry
- combined heat and power plants
- shipbuilding
Safe and reliable installation
As a VCA++ certified company, Profiltra also supports the safe and reliable installation of expansion joints within industrial installations.
