From traditional brewing to optimal filtration at Oudaen Brewery

Oudaen Brewery has been a Profiltra customer for filter aids for many years. Since 1989, beer has been brewed according to traditional recipes in this city brewery on the Oude Gracht in Utrecht.

The passion for the brewing craft can be tasted in the various beers produced by Oudaen Brewery, including pilsner, tripel, bock beer, dubbel, and IPA. Head brewer Maurice Arrindell has been with the brewery for 17 years and, together with two colleagues, brews the beers in the brewery located in the cellar of the City Castle.

Filter aids within the beer brewing process

Filtration plays an important role within the brewing process. Oudaen Brewery’s regular beers, with the exception of the wheat beer, are filtered using Celite 577Z.

This filter aid is supplied by Profiltra to various breweries within the Benelux. Celite 577Z is a very fine grade that ensures fast and effective filtration, specifically removing a portion of the spent yeast from the beer.

The desire for coarser filtration

The brewery expressed a desire to filter the beer slightly more coarsely. Together with head brewer Maurice Arrindell, filtration specialist Ingmar Schuurman investigated which solution best met this requirement.

Based on this analysis, Profiltra advised the application of Hyflo Supercel Lompoc within the filtration process. Oudaen Brewery will start using this grade in the near future.
